Pacquiao beats Thurman via split decision; wins WBA (Super) Welterweight title

Filipino boxing idol Sen. Manny Pacquiao seized the WBA (Super) Welterweight Belt on Saturday, July 20, at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States of America while dealing American fighter Keith Thurman his first loss.

Two judges scored 115-112 in favor of the 40-year old Pacquiao while the third judge, Glenn Feldman, scored 114-113 in favor of the 30-year old Thurman.

The only eight division world champion of the world quickly gained momentum in the fight after knocking down Thurman with 25 seconds left in the first round.

Pacquiao continued to go into the offensive as he tried to floor his American opponent again.

In the fifth round, the nose of Thurman started to bleed from all the hits that he took from the Pambansang Kamao but the American slugger refused to go down and started to respond with his own shots.

Starting round seven, the exchange of blows between Pacquiao and Thurman became more frequent but both fighters remaines standing in the ring.

In the end, the tenacity of Pacquiao allowed him to emerge victorious in his 70th fight and deal Thurman his first loss since the American fighter started his professional boxing career in 2007.

Aside from winning the title, Pacquiao also made history as the oldest welterweight boxing champion.
