Outgoing Information and Communications Technology Sec. Eliseo Rio is questioning the timing of the appointment of Sen. Gregorio Honasan as new secretary of the said agency.
Rio said that he is doubtful why Malacanang was hastening the transition on leadership when the DICT is currently busy in choosing for the third telco player in the country.
According to Rio, he doesn’t find any reason why Honasan should immediately take over DICT.
The outgoing official hopes that he will remain in the said post until the agency is able to confirm the third telco player, because of the hard work involved throughout the process.
The DICT and National Telecommunications Commission has given provisional authority to Mislatel Consortium as the third telco players; but will have to go through a post-qualification review before they finalized their decision.
Mislatel Consurtium is partly owned by Davao business tycoon Dennis Uy; a known President Rodrigo Duterte supporter.
On Friday, via text message sent to reporters, Sen. Honasan said that he has already accepted President Duterte’s offer to head the DICT. He will automatically resign from his Senate post once he assumes office and has been confirmed by the Commission on Appointments.
