A newly-wed Filipino couple who were on their honeymoon had reportedly died while snorkeling on Sunday, January 13, as per the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).
According to reports, the couple got married on December 18 and left Manila for their honeymoon on January 9.
The 29-year-old wife and her 30-year-old husband who came from Laguna were guests in a resort in Dhiffushi island and were snorkeling when they started drowning.
In a statement on Monday, DFA said that “both were rescued by resort workers but were pronounced dead upon arrival at a local hospital. Authorities were reported to be investigating the incident.”
However, the agency did not further go on identifying the victims but assured that they are already in contact with the couple’s immediate relatives and expressed its sympathies to their families. They assured them of assistance through the Philippine Embassy in Bangladesh, which has jurisdiction over Maldives, in the repatriation of the couple’s remains.
