The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council is leaving it to the discretion of the local government units whether to evacuate their residents due to Tropical Depression Basyang.
According to NDRRMC Executive Director Ricardo Jalad, the LGUs are the most aware of the situation in areas within their jurisdiction.
The NDRRMC is also coordinating with the Department of Interior and Local Government in order to continuously remind LGUs in the Visayas and Mindanao that will be hit by Basyang.
Some areas in Mindanao, including Butuan City in Agusan Del Norte, Iligan City in Lanao Del Norte, have already evacuated amid the continued rise in water level.
Jalad said that he hopes it will be easier to convince residents to evacuate especially with what they experienced in the last two storms that hit their region last year.
As of 10am on Tuesday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration monitored the center of Basyang at Cantilan, Surigao Del Sur.
Basyang has a wind strength of 55 kilometers per hour near the center, and a gustiness of about 75 kilometer per hour.
