The country’s Math geniuses will compete to bring pride to their respective regions and schools in the upcoming National Finals of the 2017 Metrobank-MTAP-DepEd Math Challenge (MMC) on April 22, 2016 (Saturday), 8:30 am at the Metrobank Plaza Auditorium in Makati City.
Winners will be awarded after the competition. Tablet computers will be used by the national finalists in solving math problems instead of the traditional pen and paper.
This lessens the amount of time judges spend in checking the answers, leading to a faster generation of contest results. The MMC is the first math competition in the Philippines to use such technology.
In addition, math questions will be posted on the MMC Facebook page in real-time to engage other math enthusiasts.
Awarding of winners will be at5:00 PM the same day. Serving as Guest of Honor is Manila Tytana Colleges presidentDr. Sergio Cao, who will deliver an inspirational message to the young members of the audience.
He will be joined by MTAPpresident Sr. Iluminada Coronel and MBFI president Aniceto Sobrepeña in awarding the winners. Winners in the individual and team categories and their coaches will receive medals, trophies, and cash prizes totalling to PhP 294,000.
Now on its 16th year, MMC is the most widely participated math competition in the country among elementary and high school students, with 572,916 students participating in the nationwide elimination rounds last February.
It is being organized by the Metrobank Foundation, Inc. (MBFI) in partnership with the Mathematics Teachers Association of the Philippines (MTAP) and the Department of Education (DepEd).
The annual Math Challenge produces national winners who get to compete and eventually win in international competitions.Among them are Farrell Eldrian Wu and Kyle Patrick Dulay who reaped the first gold medals of the Philippines at the recent 57th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) held in Hong Kong.
