The Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) suspended the team Soccksargen Marlins due to allegations of ‘game fixing and other related schemes’.
“This should serve as a serious reminder to all other teams in the MPBL that we are intolerant to any form of cheating and other unsportsmanlike behavior,” Sen. Manny Pacquiao, owner and founder of the two year-old basketball league, said in a statement
“We formed MPBL precisely to promote fair play in basketball so I don’t want to hear anything that would besmirch the name of the league,” Pacquiao added.
The senator also called for the National Bureau of Investigation to investigate the alleged cases of game-fixing in the MPBL.
Prior to the suspension, the Marlins remain win-less after 18 games in the ongoing MPBL Lakan Cup.
MPBL Commissioner Kenneth Duremdes recently issued a memorandum informing teams that the league is conducting an investigation parallel to the probe of the NBI regarding the involvement of management personnel, coaching staff, and players on game fixing and other related schemes.
Duremdes also announced that Pacquiao will release the names of people ‘involved in game fixing and other scheming activities that tend to control the result of the games’ after conducting the investigation.
“All persons included in the list shall be penalised and/or banned from the MPBL,” the memorandum dated Oct. 31 read.
