After discovering millions worth of luxury vehicles, the Bureau of Customs (BOC) said that they will be destroying the smuggled cars to send a clear message of the administration’s stern war against corruption and illegal smuggling.
During an interview with Cagayan Economic Zone Authority (CEZA) Administrator Attorney Raul Lambino in DZRH’s Isyu he noted that President Rodrigo Duterte himself would most probably attend the destruction ceremony.
According to Lambino, the luxury vehicles were smuggled into the country way before the President’s term on 2012, 2013, and 2014.
Lambino also explained that unlike the previous administration, the cars would not be allowed to be auctioned since the money would end up in the hands of the smugglers yet again.
“Hindi pwede i-auction yan kasi ang makikinabang ay yung nagpasok ng illegal, sila din ang bibili diyan,” he said.
According to the CEZA Administrator, over 800 luxury vehicles were confiscated including car brands such as Ferrari, McLaren sports car, Lamborghini, Humer, Mercedes Benz, Range Rover, Porsche, BMW, and more.
Lambino quipped that the government may use the scrapped cars pieces to build a monument to serve as a symbol of its war on illegal smuggling.
No specific date was cited on when the cars would be demolished.
The BOC said that it will also be destroying some Php 13 million worth of smuggled agricultural products and other products.
