Presidential Spokesperson and Chief Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo belied on Tuesday, June 11, a newspaper report stating that the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. lost Php 154 billion due to overpayment and fraud since 2013.
Panelo said that Department of Health Sec. Francisco Duque claimed that the article has no basis, and that PhilHealth only lost Php 300 million.
“It’s a malicious, baseless article with respect to the amount. Parang, magkano iyon, 150 billion? Parang nilobo nila nang husto, mali daw iyong mga basis,” Panelo said during a press briefing in Malacanang.
Meanwhile, the Palace official stressed that President Rodrigo Duterte wants a clean slate in the PhilHealth amidst the investigation of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) regarding the ‘ghost dialysis’ scam that hit the agency.
While President Duterte still trusts acting PhilHealth Chief Roy Ferrer and the agency’s board members, Panelo said that the Chief Executive will accept their resignations.
“He (President Duterte) says he needs a clean slate, so that the investigation will proceed uninfluenced. And he told them (PhilHealth officials) that he directed the NBI to have a full scale investigation,” Panelo said.
The spokesperson further revealed that President Duterte has offered one of the soon to be vacated positions in PhilHealth to a certain Dr. Jaime Curz.
Panelo added that second-level officials will run PhilHealth after the resignation of the current CEO and board while their replacements have yet to be appointed.
