Malacanang mourns the death of Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) vice chairperson Ghazali Jaafar.
“The Palace takes this opportunity to send our heartfelt condolences to the family members and friends of Mr. Jaafar,” Presidential Spokesperson and Chief Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo said in a statement.
“He has fought many battles for peace and may Allah grant him a place in Jannah (Paradise),” added Panelo, who described Jaafar as a ‘warrior of peace’.
Jaafar passed away on Wednesday, March 13, at the age of 75 while confined at the Davao Doctors Hospital in Davao City.
Prior to his passing, President Rodrigo Duterte appointed Jaafar as chairperson of the Bangsamoro Transition Commission in January 2017.
Jaafar was also appointed as a member of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA) for the newly established Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao in February 2019.
His last public appearance was during the oath-taking ceremony of BTA members in Malacañang on February 22.
Jaafar also served as the chairperson of the MILF Peace Negotiating Panel from 1996 to 1997. He was also the first vice chairperson of the MILF Central Committee and MILF for Political Affairs.
