Magalong: Purisima refuses to be interviewed, give up phone

Resigned Philippine National Police (PNP) chief general Alan Purisima has turned down offers from the PNP Board of Inquiry (BOI) to be interviewed to shed more light on the Mamasapano incident where 44 police commandos died.

Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit chief Director Benjamin Magalong, head of the BOI, said on Monday that aside from refusing to be interviewed, Purisima also does not want to give up his cellular phone, where he and President Aquino had exchanged text messages over the Mamasapano operation.

“Malaking tulong sana ang follow-up interview with the key players such Purisima and some leaders of the MILF (Moro Islamic Liberation Front) and the AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines). Gusto rin sana natin ma-examine yung mga cellphone nila, to know the exchange of text messages,” Magalong said.

The panel head said the interview with Purisima and the top military and MILF officials would be vital in completing their report on the incident as it would verify or corroborate the statesments of the witnesses.

“But as you know, may mga limitation tayo, we are just a fact-finding not a judicial body who can compel a person or an evidence through subpoena,” Magalong said.

There are also intentions to interview Aquino but as of now, Malacañang has yet to issue a reply, Magalong said.

“Gumawa po kami ng paraan, through our SILG Mar Roxas para i-express yung aming intention para ma-interview ang Pangulo. Pero wala pong nangyari. Wala po kaming na-receive na reply. But you know it’s the prerogative of the President,” Magalong said.

The BOI again failed to comply with its given deadline, which was today.
