An impeachment case against Supreme Court Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno has passed the House of Representatives.
30 lawmakers voted in favor of the impeachment complaint filed by Attorney Larry Gadon which was declared by the House Justice Committee to be sufficient in form and substance.
Four congressmen voted against the said complaint.
Atty. Gadon accused Sereno of corruption for spending more than Php 5 million in buying personal vehicles, and for travelling abroad via business class flights, while bringing a large entourage made up of other lawyers, her staff members, and security.
Atty. Gadon also indicted Sereno of violating the Constitution for falsifying many resolutions of the Supreme Court, for manipulating the appeal of the Department of Justice regarding the arraignment of members of the Maute Terror group, for misdeclaration of her Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth, for removing former Solicitor General Francis Jardeleza from the Judicial and Bar Council shortlist, and for not acting on the petition to increase the benefits of retired magistrates and judges.
Atty. Gadon further added that Sereno prevented a Muntinlupa City Court from issuing an arrest warrant against Senator Leila De Lima, and told the Court of Appeals to ignore the orders of the Lower House. The Chief Justice also allegedly doctored her personal data sheet, failed to report her attorney’s fee, and did not pay the right taxes.
Meanwhile, the House Justice Committee junked the impeachment case filed by the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption and the Vanguard of the Philippine Constitution due to lack of form.
28 lawmakers voted against, while 5 congressmen voted in favor of, the said impeachment complaint filed against Sereno.
