LOVE, HURT AND LIES: A local showbiz review of the year 2013

Heartaches, heartbreaks, and new loves in 2013

Celebrities tend to live their lives at an accelerated speed – particularly when it comes to “LOVE”.

And as we prepare to say “goodbye” to 2013, it only seems right to remember how the year has been for the inhabitants from the world of Show business. Once again, let us take a look on how love has moved fast for some showbiz personalities.

The year of the snake did not seem to be nice for some showbiz couples. There have been a lot of break-ups in the last 12 months – and most of them ended in bitter splits.

Showbiz industry was shocked with the reported separation of Sunshine Cruz with her husband for 13 years Cesar Montano, January this year. The name Krista Miller was tagged as the third party. However, some have speculated that the separation was a blessing in disguise for the actress, as this became a catalyst for the revival of her career.  Sunshine said “Separation is always not happy. Good or bad, I can honestly say it made me a better person. It made me a stronger person.”

It is May this year when Comedy Queen Ai-Ai delas Alas confirmed separation with her husband for one month, businessman Jed Salang. In a taped interview with “The Buzz” host Boy Abunda, Ai-Ai admitted that she left their conjugal home after she was physically assaulted on May 2. Despite trying her best to have a fairy tale like life, the actress still chose to end the relationship because of Jed’s propensity for gambling, infidelity, and physical violence.

Despite speculations, ex-couple Luis Manzano and Jennylyn Mercado opted to not talk about their split last October. Their two-year relationship did not seem to work well when they chose to end it for the reason of falling out of love.  From their interviews, the two insisted that there was no third-party involved although the name of Mercado’s ex-boyfriend, Dennis Trillo, was being dragged on the issue.

In the same month, spreading like wildfire is the confirmation of Angel Locsin and Phil Younghusband’s separation. The two remained silent after their decision of putting an end to their more than a year relationship. As a gentleman, Younghusband thanked their supporters and politely asked to respect their decision of keeping their personal lives private. However, both parties admitted that ‘time’ is one of the factors why their relationship did not work out. The two started their romantic relationship with their exchange of message in the social networking site, twitter.

What is so peculiar about the two couple’s recent break-ups is that everybody knows that Luis and Angel were once a couple and they coincidentally confirmed their separation with their respective partners in the same month. This does not skip the curious mind of people and led to the speculation that the two might rekindle their romance. However, the two prefer to keep mum on the possibility of getting back together. The two said during their separate interviews that it is not the right time to talk about rekindling together after their split with their respective partners. In an interview Luis said, “It’s very, very hard to comment on that kasi siyempre may pinagdaanan rin naman si Angel at ako rin, and to comment on that, siguro it will fuel certain flames na iwasan na siguro natin dahil baka mabigyan ng hindi magandang interpretasyon”. On the other, Angel’s separate interview on ‘Buzz ng Bayan” similarly put off giving a direct answer. “Baka ‘yon po ang hindi ko masagot sa ngayon. Sa ngayon po, I’m very happy doing what I love most and helping people out,” said Locsin.

In line with this, everyone was surprised when singer-actress Nikki Gil and international singer Billy Joe Crawford confirmed their break-up. The two were considered as one of the strongest couples in showbiz. Their relationship would have turned five years; however the couple decided to put an end to it later this year. In an interview, Crawford said that the reason for the break up was their differences in values and he insisted that there is no third-party involved.

Opposing to the actor’s statement, Coleen Garcia,Crawford’s co-host in the noon time show “It’s Showtime”, was tagged by netizens as the “third-party” for the former couple’s four long year relationship. Garcia denies the rumor and said in an interview that the people should not put malice to their closeness as they were all like family in the noon time show.

After her silence, the stronger and braver Nikki Gil finally speaks up to the public regarding the break-up. “I don’t care. I don’t like looking back. I just want to move forward. I’m done with that. I think I’ve wasted enough time and energy on it. And okay na ako. Parang tama na, okay na ako. Things have been said, and things have come out. It is what it is, so I’m… Hands off na ako diyan,” she said.

However, in spite of the back-to-back heart breaks for some celebs this year, we should not forget those who seem to be lucky in love in the year of the snake. While some went through painful heartbreaks, others seem to have found their better half in the year 2013.

One of which is love-team from “Pinoy Big Brother’, housemates Melai Cantiveros and Jason Francisco. The two are finally husband and wife after tying the knot last December 9 in General Santos City.  The wedding came a few months after Cantiveros admitted that she is pregnant with Francisco’s child.

In the month of August, Chito and Neri scandal hit social media. The couple has been together for two years now.  It may be recalled that Chito confessed in a previous magazine interview that he and Neri have been going out since December 2011. The first video of their scandal became one of the most contrversial news in the beginning of August. It was allegedly a personal video that was stored in the hard drive stolen from Chito’s home. Chito posted on his instagram account a pic of them and captioned as “Hindi nyo kami matitinag”. People were shocked, some criticized them while some supported them. However, netizens went abuzz once again when the so-called Chito Miranda and Neri Naig Scandal Video Part 2 arose a few weeks after the first one.

The scandals that circulated in social networking sites definitely put their lives to the test, specially their images as showbiz personalities. However, this does not affect their relationship with each other nor with their family. This made them much stronger by proving to their critics that they are deeply in love with each other. In an interview with Chito, he said that he is planning to start a family with his girlfriend Neri.

Meanwhile, it was in September when the international singing sensation Charice Pempengco admitted to the public that she and her girlfriend Alyssa Quijano will be living together in her house in Cabuyao, Laguna.

The relationship did not sit well with Pempengco’s mother.  But the couple remained strong as they always confess that they are happy and contented with each other. In every interview, Charice always says that she considers Alyssa not just a girlfriend but also a sister and a best friend. “Siya na ang kapatid ko nagbibigay ng advice sa ‘kin… best friend ko… iba talaga ang tagal namin magkakilala.”, Charice said.

On the other hand, the May-December love affair of “Anak” hit-maker Freddie Aguilar and his teenage girlfriend Jovie Gatdula Albao definitely created a loud noise in the industry. The relationship of the legendary music icon with his 16-year-old girlfriend became controversial and has been under scrutiny after he revealed the real age of the girl.

The Philippine law does not allow Aguilar to marry his underage girlfriend, but he still managed to find a way to pursue his plan. The folk singer recently converted into Islam and married Albao last Nov. 22. The controversial couple got married under Islamic rites held in Maguindanao. The wedding was officiated by a local cleric, Imam Abdulwahid Sumawang.

Maguindanao Governor Esmael “Toto” Mangudadatu, one of the wedding’s principal sponsors clarified that Aguilar was converted into Islam about six months ago before he decided to marry Albao.

For the finale, who was never happy for the veteran actress Maria Elise “Boots” Anson-Roa’s new found love? The actress got engaged with lawyer Francisco “King” Rodrigo Jr. as she confirmed it to the public. “After six years, God has given me a “soulmate” and future partner who I shall spend the rest of my life with,” Boots said.

It is truly amazing how destiny works for the couple as Boots tells how their story started. The couple will soon be married in June 14, 2014.

Love is for everybody, whether you are an ordinary person or a showbiz personality regardless of your age and gender. It will not always go with how you wanted it to be, but one thing is for sure… it will come your way unexpectedly, at the right time and with the right person. There will be heart breaks, but remember that will serve as a lesson for a person to become stronger, wiser, and braver.   (with contribution from Jiralyn Cambay, Jocelyn Panganiban and Cecille Pia)
