Losing candidates for the governorship and mayorship in Lanao Del Sur gathered in front of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) on Tuesday, June 11, in order to urge the poll body to nullify the results of the May 13 elections.
The group composed of Hatta Dimaporo, Agakhan Binladen Sarief, Sultan Bob Datimbang, and former Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) Director Gen. atty. Guiling Gene Mamondiong, were joined by their supporters.
The protesters urged COMELEC to declare a failure of election in Lanao Del Sur citing rampant vote-buying, the alleged pre-shading of ballots, and incidents of violence and terrorism in the province during the election period.
They appealed for the COMELEC to immediately investigate and file charges against the people behind the suspected cases of electoral fraud that resulted to the questionable proclamation of winning candidates.
The group claimed that at least 2 million residents of Lanao Del Sur loste their right to suffrage. They also asked that the COMELEC set a date for special elections.
In May, the group of Mamondiong filed a petition for the disqualification Mamintal Adiong Jr., who won the gubernatorial race in Lanao Del Sur, and a petition to declare a failure of elections in the province.
