Pomp and pageantry by a children’s mardi gras parade kicked off the 40th anniversary of Silahis ng Pasko in Baguio – the country’s premiere summer capital.
Hundreds of children from day care centers in the city’s 128 barangays, together with their parents paraded down the historic Session – Harrison road. Thousands of people lined up and sung Christmas carols to cheer up the kids, some even rushed to join the parade.
The Christmas day activity marked by the launching of “Delata Para Sa Kapwa” whereby participants donated canned goods for typhoon Yolanda victims. The donation-drive was think tanked by the pupils of Phases Learning School.
The yuletide event is organized by the National Correspondents Club of Baguio (NCCB), an aggrupation of practicing media men both from print and broadcast organizations based in the city and in the Cordilleras headed by veteran newsman and sportsman Nars Padilla and in cooperation with the City Social Welfare and Development Office led by Betty F. Fangasan, who is also the co-chairperson of the annual event.
Selection of the Baguio Lucky Christmas Baby 2013 (Dec 25) and Lucky New Year Baby 2014 will highlight the month long celebration.
Other highlights are: Dec 8 – PMA Cadet’s Day at the Park to be marked by a Silent Drill by the cadets and induction and oath-taking of the newly members and officers of NCCB; Dec 14 – Special Day For Special People- wheelathon (paraplegics), walkathon (blind) and chess for the sightless and Palaro for blind, mentally challenged, hearing and speech impaired and paraplegics; Dec 15 – Kafagway Sportsfest, Dancing and Singing Christmas Tree; Dec 28 – Baguio Lucky Balikbayan Day Special.
