It took five sets but in the end the Adamson Lady Falcons put away the University of Santo Tomas Tigresses, 25-22, 25-21, 20-25, 28-30, 16-14, Wednesday, Feb. 3 in the 78th University Athletic Association of the Philippines women’s volleyball tournament at the Philsports Multipurpose Arena in Pasig City.
Mylene Paat and Mary Joy Dacoron teamed up to make a block and then Jessica Galanza scored an ace which powered the Lady Falcons past a 14-all deadlock for the final set match point.
Galanza led the Lady Falcons with 28 points in the grueling two-hour contest against Tigresses.
Coach Sherwin Meneses lauded his players for their composure against the resilient Tigresses, who denied the Lady Falcons a three-set win by taking the third and fourth sets.
“Iyung break napunta sa amin. Ang mahalaga, naramdaman nila ang ginagawa naming conditioning. Nag 5 sets kami na dapat hindi ka napapagod. Maganda ang nangyari,” said Meneses.
The Lady Falcons share the early lead with defending champion Ateneo Lady Eagles and the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons, who won their opening matches last Sunday.
The Lady Eagles beat National University, 25-21, 25-19, 25-14, while the Lady Maroons stopped University of the East, 25-20, 25-13, 25-21.
In the men’s division, the National University Bulldogs won over Adamson, 25-22, 25-22, 25-7. They were led by James Martin Natividad and Bryan Bagunas who had 11 points each.
Raymark Woo unloaded 19 points to power La Salle past University of the East, 25-18, 28-26, 26-24.
The two teams share the early lead in the men’s side with Ateneo and Far Eastern University
