They are back.
The Ateneo De Manila University Lady Eagles bounced back from humbling back-to-back straight set defeats inflicted by arch-rival De La Salle University Lady Spikers with their own straight set victory over the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons 25-15, 25-14, 25-24 in the UAAP womens Volleyball at The Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Eagles (6 wins, 3 losses) strengthened their hold on third place behind only unbeaten De La Salle (8-0) and National University Lady Bulldogs (8-1) which beat University of Santo Tomas Tigresses 25-16, 25-20, 25-23 in the other match of the day.
Ateneo team captain Alyssa Valdez, reinforced her claim to being the country’s best open spiker by leading the Lady Eagles’ attack en route to scoring a game-high 19 points.
Valdez’s teammate Amy Ahomiro also stepped up for the Lady Eagles scoring 14 points for Ateneo.
The Lady Maroons started off poorly scoring just 15 points in the first set which they lost in close to 20 minutes, 25-15.
UP team captain Angeli Araneta led her team’s assault with eight points as they again put up weak opposition in the second set which they eventually lost 25-14.
The UP Lady Maroons played their best in the third set with with Nicole Anne Tiamzon stepping up to support Araneta. Tiamzon scored five points for the Lady Maroons with teammate Julienne Calugcug chipping in four points.
