After sweeping awards in the recent Cinemalaya Film Fest, the film “John Denver Trending” is on for a new adventure as it’s set to compete in the 24th Busan International Film Festival in South Korea on October 3-12.
In its Facebook post, the film will be heading to South Korea next month to compete with films from India, Vietnam, China, and Japan among others under the New Currents division.
However, the festival required a world premiere status yet it has made an exception for “John Denver Trending” since it has already premiered in the Philippines. It added that it is the “first Filipino film to be selected in the section after 5 years.”
The directorial debut of Arden Rod Condez definitely brought heights during the annual indie film competition as it enticed the audience with the life of John Denver Cabungcal, a teenage boy who has been caught in the frenzy of being bullied in social media.
“John Denver Trending” swept off major awards such as Best Original Music Score, Best Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Actor for Jansen Magpusao, NETPAC Jury Award, and Best Film in the awarding ceremony of the 15th Cinemalaya last August 12.
Aside from the film, five other Filipino films will also be presented at the annual Busan International Film Festival: Mindanao by Brillante Mendoza, The Halt by Lav Diaz, Lingua France by Isabel Sandoval, Verdict by Raymund Ribay Gutierrez, and Basurero by Eileen Ong Ante Cabiling.
