Tourism Secretary Wanda Teo has confirmed in a press conference Thursday afternoon that the 2017 Miss Universe will be held in the Philippines on January 30, 2017.
According to Teo, we already have a President who is from Mindanao and the current Miss Universe, Pia Wurtzbach is also from Mindanao, “It is the best time for us to do the Miss Universe here in the Philippines.”
The Tourism Secretary added that the government will not be spending anything for the said pageant as private sectors will shoulder the expenses. The budget to be allocated for the said pageant amounts to $11million.
Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach paid a courtesy call to President Rodrigo Duterte recently in Malacanang. The two have discussed the possibility of hosting the said pageant here.
However, in a previous interview, President Duterte said that he is not interested in hosting the Miss Universe because the country has other more important things to focus on, including infrastructure projects.
The last time the Miss Universe Beauty pageant was held in the country was in 1994, with Charlene Gonzales-Muhlach representing the country. She won Best in National Costume and was included in the Top 6 finalists. Her answer to the question of the host regarding our country’s beaches, “high tide or low tide?” caught the attention of the world.
