Indonesia’s Makassar hands Kaya FC their first loss at the 2019 AFC Cup

Philippines’ Kaya Football Club Iloilo suffered their first defeat in the group stage of the 2019 Asian Football Confederation Cup at the hands of Indonesia’s PSM Makassar on Wednesday, April 17, at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod.

With an assist from Wiljan Pluim, Rizky Pellu scored the first goal of Makassar thru a header in the 21st minute of the game. Three minutes later, Eero Markkanen got pass Kaya’s goalkeeper Louie Casas and doubled the lead of the Indonesian team.

The Philippine squad grabbed their sole goal in the match after Jovin Bedic converted a penalty kick in the 91st minute of the game.

With their first loss, Kaya, who won one and drew two of their previous games, dropped to second place while Makassar grabbed the top spot in Group H.

Kaya will attempt to recover when they host a game against Lao Toyota of Laos on April 30 in Panaad Stadium.

They will then wrap up their games in the group stage with a match against Singapore’s Home United Football Club in May 14 at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Kallang, Singapore.

Only the top team in each group in the 2019 AFC Cup Group stage will be guaranteed a spot in the zonal semi-finals. The best runner-up among all nine group will also advance to the next stage of the football tournament.
