The House Committee on Population and Family Relations has passed a proposal that will ease the process of getting divorced in the Philippines
According to Taguig Rep. Pia Cayetano, author of An Act Providing for Absolute Divorce and Dissolution of Marriage in the Philippines, the bill introduced a provision that allows summary proceedings for divorce cases.
Cayetano explained that reasons for divorce, which include 5-years of separation, bigamous marriage, and a 6-year imprisonment of a partner, are easily identifiable.
“It is the process lang na napadali natin. This is because madaling ma-identify yung cause ng divorce. So bakit kailangan pa patagalin.” Cayetano said during DZRH’s One On One. “Kung pumasok ka diyan madali na lang iyan kasi summary proceedings na lang iyan.”
The congresswoman further added that the bill will also lead to cheaper court costs and shorter proceedings because the grounds for divorce are clearer.
“Hindi hahaba ang court case kasi summary proceeding lang iyan.” Cayetano further explained. “It becomes simpler, easier, and cheaper kasi very clear yung grounds. Walang dahilan yung abugado na pahabain iyan.”
The bill has been approved by the House committee on February 21, and is now waiting endorsement in the House of Representatives.
