They made it all the way through!
The 2017 grand champion of the MBC Choral Competition open category has been named and they are the harmonic ensemble of Coro Obcento headed by their conductor, Emil Cruz.
The Aliw Theater in Pasay City on Saturday was filled with some of the best choir groups that the country has to offer – from the open category: South Cotabato Chorale, Nueva Ecija Ambassadors, Coro Obcento, UE Chorale, St. Scholastica’s Academy Marikina High School Glee Club, Coro Regina Coeli, Tarlac Chamber Choir, and Oratory Boys Chorus.
According to Cruz, their group trained day in and day out for the highly awaited competition. Given the difficulty of having a group mostly composed of young professionals, the group has been striving for the title of grand champion since 2012.
On Saturday they were finally able to take home the title and win the grand prize of Php 150,000.
Coro Obscento also fetched the special award for Best Show Choir.
Also taking home another special award was the Tarlac Chamber Choir for the Best in Original Novelty Arrangement.
Coro Obscento’s winning performance “Livin’ on a Prayer” by Bon Jovi truly did get them all the way through the finals with their vocal skills partnered with a lively dance routine which hyped both the audience and the judges.
Last year the group placed 3rd in the grand finals.
In an interview with DZRH, Cruz said that they will “definitely” be joining next year’s competition in a bid to defend their title.
Winner for the open category are as follows:
• Coro Obcento – Grand Champion
• Oratory Boys Chorus – 1st runner-up
• Tarlac Chamber Choir – 2nd runner-up
• South Cotabato Chorale – 3rd runner-up
