The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas has officially appointed coach Joseller ‘Yeng’ Guiao as the official head coach of the Philippine National Men’s Basketball team, also known as Gilas Pilipinas.
In a statement dated Tuesday, Nov. 6, the national sports association named Guiao, who is also the head coach of PBA team NLEX Road Warriors, as ‘the man at the helm of the Gilas Pilipinas program’. He will also take charge in the formation and the training of the team.
The SBP said that Guiao will be mainly responsible for leading Gilas to successfully compete against other national teams during the 2019 FIBA World Cup Qualifying Tournament and to qualify for the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China.
Based on the announcement signed by SBP President Alfredo Panlilio, Guiao will remain as national team head coach until the upcoming World Cup.

Previously, there have been speculations that Guiao will succeed national team head coach Vincent ‘Chot’ Reyes, who resigned from his position in September.
This is due to reports that SBP Chairperson Emeritus Manny V. Pangilinan hinted that Guiao could take over the national team program due to his efforts in preparing the hastily assembled Philippine team for the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Guiao also remained as interim head coach of the national team during the fourth window of the 2019 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers.
However, after the games against Iran and Qatar last September, the outspoken mentor didn’t confirm whether he will continue to lead the coaching staff of the national team and instead told reporters to wait for an announcement from the SBP.
