Senator Manuel “Lito” Lapid has been charged by the Office of the Ombudsman of violation of the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices at the Sandiganbayan regarding the Senator’s involvement in the alleged irregular purchase of fertilizer during his term as Pampanga Governor.
Aside from Lapid, former provincial accountant Benjamin Yuzon, provincial treasurer Vergel Yabut, Malayan Pacific Trading Corporation Incorporators Ma. Victoria Aquino-Abubakar and Leolita Aquino, and Macro-Micro Fertilizer Resources proprietor Dexter Alexander Vasquez have also been charged with the same case as well.
Based on the complaint filed by the Ombudsman, Lapid together with Abubakar, Aquino and Vasquez purchased 4.7 million pesos worth of 3,880 liters of Macro-Micro Foliar fertilizer in 2004.
However, the fertilizer was overpriced by 4.2 million pesos. The said purchase did not undergo public bidding.
