Former Senator Richard J. Gordon said democracy and transparency won as the Supreme Court has spoken on the issue of voter receipt.
“The Commission on Elections has no choice but to activate the voter verified paper audit trail feature of the vote counting machines and protect the sanctity of the ballot. With the Supreme Court deciding unanimously to order the Comelec to enable the VVPAT feature,” Gordon said.
“It is not only a victory for me because the high court decided in favor of my petition but it is a victory for the millions of Filipino voters because this feature will help ensure clean, honest and credible elections,” he said.
“Thanks to the Supreme Court, which is truly the last bastion of justice and democracy. The decision demonstrated that government agencies, like the Comelec, will never be allowed to run roughshod over peoples’ rights and will never get away with flagrant violations of the country’s laws,” Gordon stated.
“With the issuance of ballot receipts, voters will have an assurance that their ballots were properly processed by the VCMs and that their votes were correctly credited to the candidates of their choice,” Gordon concluded. (JCA)
