Gilas Pilipinas started the 2017 South East Asian Basketball Association Championships with an explosive victory.
During their game last May 12 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, the Philippine National Basketball team defeated the team of Myanmar with a score of 147-40.
At the start of the first quarter of the game, Gilas immediately scored 17 points.
Gilas continued to dominate the first half of the game and the point difference immediately reached to more than 40 points.
During the second half of the game, Myanmar tried to close the score gap through three pointers but the Philippine continued with their offensive and the game ended with a score gap of more than a hundred points.
Greatly contributing to the victory of Gilas is Calvin Abueva who scored 22 points for the Philippine National Basketball Team’s first win the continuing 2017 SEABA Championships.
However, Abueva insists that the Philippines did not ‘overkill’ their opponents.
“Sinasabi nila yun nga overkill pero hindi naman.” Abueva said after the game. “Nilalabas lang naming yung laro namin.”
Myanmar’s head coach Ten Hok Heng admitted that their team was overpowered by the Philippines through the height and physique of their players.
The Philippines will be facing next the Singapore team as the qualifying tournament of the 2017 FIBA Asia Cup continues this May 13.
