The Philippines finished 14th in the 2019 Under-19 FIBA World Cup after losing to New Zealand, 76-70, on Sunday, July 8, at the Heraklion University Sports Hall in Greece.
Flynn Cameron registered 21 points to lead the New Zealanders who placed 13th in the tournament. Max Darling also scored 16 points and Max de Geest added 15 points for the squad’s victory.
A basket from Dave Ildenfonso put Philippines up by five, 63-68, with 5:33 left in the fourth quarter.
Cameron and Darling hit back-to-back lay-ups to reduce the point gap to one, 67-68, before Ildefonso sunk two free throws to give Philippines a three point cushion, 67-70.
However, Gilas failed to fend off a late eight-point scoring run that brought New Zealand to victory.
Carl Vincent Tamayo had 24 points and 12 rebounds to pace the Philippine squad that only had one win out of their six games in the World Cup. Dalph Panopio and Ildefonso each added 16 points.
