As the third window of the FIBA Asian Qualifiers nears, Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes revealed that naturalized player Andray Blatche is not in ‘game shape’.
According to Reyes, Blatche has been working out, but he is not in the same shape compared to his previous stints with the Philippine National Men’s Basketball team.
The veteran coach hopes that the early arrival of Blatche in the Philippines will allow him to get into game shape.
“It helped that he got here early and he’s been working out,” Reyes told reporters.
“Before, when he was injured or was playing with his Chinese team, the good thing with that was that he was in game shape. Now, he is not,” Reyes added.
Blatche arrived in Manila last June 9 after taking a vacation in the United States of America.
Reyes has also revealed that Gilas veteran Calvin Abueva is also not in game shape, and is struggling due to not playing or practing for almost two weeks.
“His timing is off and he is not as sharp as the other guys. That’s what’s not playing does to you,” Reyes explained
Abueva was slapped with an indefinite suspension from his PBA team, Alaska Aces, for being away without leave (AWOL), but is allowed to join Gilas Pilipinas.
On the third window of the qualifiers for the 2019 FIBA World Cup, the Philippine team will be travelling to Chinese Taipei to face the home team on June 29 before hosting a game against Australia on July 2.
