Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes clarified the status of Alaska Aces star Calvin Abueva in the Philippine National Men’s Basketball team.
According to Reyes, Abueva continues to practice with the national team as part of the player pool but is not being considered for the second round of the qualifiers for the 2019 FIBA World Cup.
“We took him out of the consideration for the second window but he has remained part of the pool.” Reyes clarified to the reporters.
However, the coach of the national team added that players can ‘play’ themselves in or out of consideration and in or out of the national team pool.
“People can play themselves into consideration, into the pool, out of the pool, or out of consideration. There’s no change there.” the veteran coach further clarified.
Reyes also admitted that they have not yet made a final decision regarding the line-up for the upcoming of Gilas since they are still assessing the injuries of some players.
“We haven’t made any decisions either way because we’re still assessing all the injury status of the other guys.” Reyes revealed. “We’re not yet in a position to make the final decision or determination about it.”
Meanwhile, Abueva has expressed hope that he will still be included in the games of Gilas against Australia on February 22, and against Japan on February 25.
Previously, coach Reyes announced that Abueva and Rain or Shine Elasto Painters center Raymond Almazan will not be included in the line-up for the next two games of Gilas since both players missed the team’s first three practices for 2018.
