The Philippine national men’s basketball team rallied in the second half to beat Ivory Coast during a tune-up game on Thursday, August 8, at the Palacio Multiusos de Guadalajara in Spain.
Andray Blatche contributed 18 points and 10 assists to lead Gilas Pilipinas. Paul Lee also scored 16 points, Japeth Aguilar added 12 points, and CJ Perez had 11 points for the Filipinos to sweep their back-to-back tune-up games.
The taller Ivory Coast dominated the first quarter of the game and ended the period with a nine-point advantage, 19-28. The Filipinos, however, trimmed the deficit to five, 45-50, at the end of the first half before finally taking the lead at the third period, 79-75.
The Philippine team missed the services of Gabe Norwood during the game because of an injury sustained during the team’s earlier 102-80 win against Congo.
11 players of the Gilas Pilipinas pool flew to Spain for a 10-day training camp as part of their preparations for the 2019 FIBA World in China that will start on August 31 and run until September 15.
They now travel to Malaga, Spain for a mini-tournament during which the Filipinos will have a rematch against Congo and the victor will face the winner of the game between Spain and Ivory Coast.
