The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra on Friday announced that Gerard Salonga will be joining them as one of the Orchestra’s Assistant Conductor, starting this 2016-2017 season.  The other assistant conductor is Vivian Ip, a member of the Arnold Schoneberg Chor and Wiener Singverein.

Salonga and Ip were chosen from the more than 170 applicants from Hong Kong and abroad.  They will be working alongside guest conductors, observing rehearsal, acting as a potential cover conductor and conducting the HK Phil’s Education and Outreach concerts.

Based on the press release issued by the HK Philharmonic Orchestra, Gerard will start his work with Yu Long for the opening concerts this September.  Long is the orchestra’s principal guest conductor.

Salonga is currently the director of the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra, and has worked with several well-known performers, including his sister, Broadway star Lea Salonga, Hins Cheung, Elisa Chan, and Philippines’ pop royalties like Gary Valenciano, Martin Nievera and Asia’s Songbird, Regine Velasquez, among others.

Incidentally, Salonga’s sister, international singer-theater actress Lea Salonga was eager to announce via her social media account this latest accomplishment of his brother.
