Filipino figther beats Mexican foe for NABO lightweight title

Philippines’ Romero Duno seized the North American Boxing Organization (NABO) lightweight title by winning via split decision against Mexico’s Juan Antonio Rodriguez on Thursday, May 17, in California, United States of America.

Two judges scored 85-84, and 86-83 in favor of Duno while one judge scored 85-84 in favor of Rodriguez after the bout at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino.

The referee ended the match in the ninth round after Rodriguez suffered a cut on his right cheek due to an accidental headbutt. Earlier in the fourth round, another accidental headbutt caused a cut near the left eye of the Mexican fighter.

In the seventh round, Duno lost a point after landing a low blow.

Duno knocked down Rodriguez in the eight round thru a blow in the body. However, the Mexican fighter rose back up and the Filipino boxer failed to follow-up before time ran out.

The victory allowed the 23-year old California – based Filipino fighter to extend his winning streak to 11 fights and to improved hisĀ  professional record to 20 wins, 15 knockouts, and one loss.

Meanwhile, his 31-year old Mexican opponent dropped to 30 wins, 26 knockouts, and eight losses.
