Not so fast.
The game won in overtime by the Ateneo De Manila University Blue Eagles 68-64 over the Far Eastern University Tamaraws last Saturday has been placed under protest.
University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 77 Men’s Basketball Commissioner Andy Jao said he received a letter Monday, September 15, from Far Eastern University placing the game under protest based on a technicality.
The protest centers around the three-point shot which was made by Ateneo’s Von Pessumal in the last 3:20 of the final quarter of regulation.
“I will study the matter,” said Jao deferring judgment on the issue.
FEU board representative Josie de Leon, in her letter to Jao, said FEU is questioning the manner officials made the adjustments to Pessumal’s basket.
With 3:20 to go in regulation time, Pessumal made a shot from the corner. It was counted as a two-pointer and extended the FEU lead to 57-49.
Later in the game, FEU’s Mike Tolomia was fouled with 27 seconds left and with FEU ahead, 58-56. Before he could attempt the free throws the score was adjusted to 58-57 following a review of Pessumal’s basket which was ruled a three-pointer.
De Leon cited Rule 4 of the UAAP basketball handbook, which states that a video replay to review a shot should be done during a dead ball situation, a time out or at the end of the period.
The review upgraded Pessumal’s basket to a three-pointer. The FEU position is that the review and adjustment to the score should have been made during any of the four dead ball situations in the game, in 2:07, 1:57, 1:40 and 1:28.
