President Rodrigo Duterte named Lt. Gen. Benjamin Madrigal Jr. as the next Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff.

Madrigal, a graduate of Philippine Military Academy Sandiwa Class of 1985, will succeed outgoing AFP Chief Gen. Carlito Galvez Jr., who will retire next Wednesday, Dec. 12, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 56 years old.

Last October, Madrigal was assigned to head the Eastern Mindanao Command (EASTMINCOM), a post that he still holds today.

Prior to being assigned to the EASTMINCOM, he also served as the commander of the Southern Luzon Command and the 4th Infantry Division of the Philippine Army.

Madrigal will retire from the military in September 2019.
