On Friday, at least five unidentified assailants ambushed and killed the former driver of convicted drug lord Peter Co while on the way to a regional trial court in Batangas City.
In a report, the driver, identified as Elvis Areglo was being escorted by personnel of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) from the provincial jail to a regional trial court when the shooting happened. He was then declared dead on the spot.
Areglo faced drug charges in the towns of Padre Garcia and Rosario in Batangas. In 2006, he was arrested with two other men in Lipa City, Batangas for transporting large amounts of chemicals allegedly used to manufacture shabu.
Co, whose real name is Wu Tuan Yuan, is serving a life sentence after he was convicted of selling illegal drugs in 2001. In 2016, President Rodrigo Duterte named Co among the “top tier” drug lords who supply the largest amount of illegal drugs from China to the Philippines.
