Alab Pilipinas received their first loss at the ASEAN Basketball League season at the hands of the Westsports Malaysia Dragons on Wednesday, Jan. 9, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Jonathan Wong scored 21 points including the game-winning lay-up that allowed the Dragons to seize a 72-71 victory at the MABA Stadium.
Nnanna Egwu finished with 15 points while Chris Eversley and Shee Fai Loh each gave 12 points as the Malaysian squad gained their third win after six outings.
After trailing behind by nine points, 18-9, during the early minutes of the game, Alab Pilipinas outscored the Dragons, 20-17, in the second period to secure a two-point lead before the end of the first half
The Philippine squad widened the point gap to nine points, 37-46, in the third quarter. However, in the fourth period, the Malaysian team started to reduce the lead of Alab Pilipinas until a three-pointer from Wong enabled the home team to regain the lead, 68-67.
A jump shot from PJ Ramos still put the Philippine squad up by one point, 70-71, with 44 seconds left in the game but Wong scored his final two points in the game to give the victory to the Dragons.
Renaldo Balkman led Alab Pilipinas with his 31 points and 14 rebounds, while Ramos finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds as the defending champions dropped to a 5-1 win-loss record.
