The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) plans to reduce by 90% the deployment of Filipino skilled workers to other countries.
DOLE Sec. Silvestre ‘Bebot’ Bello III said that the construction industry in the Philippines, and the government’s ‘Build, Build, Build’ program has a large demand for highly skilled workers including carpenters, welders, plumbers and electricians.
Bello stressed that the government must prioritize the demand of workers in the Philippines rather in other countries.
“Kung marami naman demand, napakalakas ng demand para sa construction workers dito sa Pilipinas kaya kailangan magbawas-bawas tayon,” Bello said during DZRH’s ACS Balita.
Bello explained that recruitment agencies have been told not to allow the deployment of highly skilled workers to other countries.
While the salary is lower compared to other countries, the labor secretary believes that Filipinos will be happier working in the Philippines since they will be with their families.
Bello also assured that Filipino workers will experience an annual salary adjustment. He further added that companies are obliged to ensure the safety and health of workers per the Occupational Safety Law.
