Allowing barangay officials to carry firearms is legal is covered by the Constitution.
Interior and Local Government Usec. Martin Dino made the confirmation during his interview over at DZRH’s ISYU.
According to Dino, based on the local government code, barangay officials are allowed to carry firearms, especially the barangay chief, as long as it is within his jurisdiction.
Dino added that heads of the barangay need to be armed as part of their ‘first line of defense’, especially in their operations against illegal drugs, fighting off crimes and other barangay concerns.
In line with this, if the head of the barangay wants to carry a firearm, the DILG will facilitate in the processing of the necessary papers and documents.
However, Dino insisted that before issuing anyone a license to carry, they need to undergo proper training.
