The Department of Education (DepEd) clarified on Tuesday, Feb. 4, that the 2020 Palarong Pambansa will not be suspended.
DepEd made the clarification after Sec. Leonor Briones said during a hearing in the Senate that they will be postponing several athletic meets and talent competitions as part of their measures to prevent the spread of the 2019 novel coronavirus.
“Secretary Briones has announced earlier that the Department will issue a memorandum giving details on the postponement of specific national DepEd events usually held in February such as the NSTF (National Science and Technology Forum), NFOT (National Festival of Talents), and NSPC (National Schools Press Conference),” DepEd said in a Facebook post.
“We reiterate that the Palarong Pambansa is NOT included in the list since it will officially open by May this year,” the DepEd added.
While discussing measures taken by DepEd against the 2019-nCoV, Briones mentioned the 2020 Palarong Pambansa which is expected to gather around 30,000 people from all over the Philippines.
“Right now, the policy is for temporary postponement of all these activities because we will be drawing in learners, teachers, and, as I said, family members from all region for these athletic meets, talent festivities,” Briones said during the Senate hearing.
