The Commission on Elections is reminding politicians that campaigning is prohibited on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.

According to COMELEC Spokesman James Jimenez, Republic Act 7188 states that the day before the elections, election day, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday are not covered in the campaign period.

Those who will violate the said law may be facing punishment based on the Omnibus Election Code and they may even be jailed for up to six years, face disqualification from public office, and be strip off of their right to suffrage.

Jimenez added that on Holy Thursday and Friday, the public is expected to be praying and that politicians should show “delicadeza” during this period.
