Association of Boxing Alliances of the Philippines President Ricky Vargas and incumbent Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Jose ‘Peping’ Cojuangco have filed their certificate of candidacy for the upcoming re-elections of the local Olympic organization.
Cojuangco and Vargas went to the Philisports Complex, Pasig City on February 21 to file their certificates of candidacy for the elections of the POC on February 23.
Both are running for the position of POC president.
In December 2017, the Pasig Regional Trial Court ordered a re-election after declaring the 2016 elections of the sports body null and void.
During the 2016 elections, Cojuangco was given a fourth term as POC president after running unopposed due to the disqualification of Vargas.
After a general assembly on February 20, the POC agreed to have hold new elections following the recommendation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
However, there is still chance that Vargas will once again be disqualified since the three-man election committee, headed by former IOC representative for the Philippines Frank Elizalde, will still scrutinze the eligibility of the candidates.
The same committee disqualified Vargas during the 2016 election since the boxing head allegedly did not meet the requirements to be an active member of the POC.
