Philippines’ Ceres Negros tasted their first loss in the 2019 AFC (Asian Football Confederation) Cup at the hands of Vietnam’s Becamex Binh Duong, 1-0, on Thursday, May 15, at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod.
Ceres’ goalkeeper Roland Muller made wonderful saves for the home squad. However, Wander Luiz scored a goal from 40 yards away in the 88th minute for the visiting Vietnamese team to secure the victory.
However, even with the loss, the Philippine team, which won five out of their six games in the group stage, topped Group G and will move to the zonal semifinals of the football tournament.
Ceres will face Vietnam’s Ha Noi Football Club, which has four wins, one draw, and one loss in Group F, in the zonal semifinals to decide which team will advance to the zonal finals. The first game will happen on June 18 at the Panaad Stadium.
Becamex also secured a slot in the zonal semifinals since their victory against Ceres allowed them to top the runners-up in all groups. They will go up against Indonesia’s PSM Makassar for a ticket to zonal finals.
