President Rodrigo Roa Duterte had appointed Court of Appeals Justice Jose Reyes Jr. as the Associate Justice of the Supreme Court on Friday, August 10 as per the confirmation of a Palace official.
Reyes will be succeeding the post of Justice Presbitero Velasco Jr. who is set to retire this week.
The 67-year-old justice is a graduate of San Beda University – School of Law and was able to pass his Bar exams in 1977. He was presiding judge at the Metropolitan Trial Court in Rizal and executive judge of the Rizal Regional Trial Court before he was appointed to the appellate court in 2003.
Reyes aced Court Administrator Midas Marquez, CA justices Apolinario Bruselas, Rosmari Carandang, Ramon Garcia, Ramon Hernando, Amy Lazaro-Javier, and former Ateneo De Manila University College of Law Dean Cesar Villanueva who were also vying for the post. He was previously nominated to replace then-SC Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno in 2012, SC Justice Roberto Abad in 2014, and SC Justices Martin Villarama Jr. and Arturo Brion in 2016.
His appointment marks Duterte’s fifth appointee in the highest court after the retirement of Justice and now Ombudsman Samuel Martires, and Justices Noel Tijam, Andres Reyes Jr., and Alexander Gesmundo.
Reyes is set to take his oath on Monday, August 13 according to Special Assitant to the President Bong Go.
