The Philippine National Police is verifying the report that 40% of the barangay chairmen in the country are involved in illegal drugs.

According to PNP Chief Ronald ‘Bato’ Dela Rosa, the Police Directorate for Intelligence is carefully studying the list of more than 42,000 barangay officials and other personalities implicated with the illegal drug trade.

Dela Rosa confirmed that a case will be filed as soon as the allegations have been verified true.

The PNP Chief also said that they will give the chance for barangay officials to prove that they have completely changed their way of life. Dela Rosa promised that repentant narco-officials will have their names removed from the drug list held by President Rodrigo Duterte.

The President wishes to postpone the barangay elections scheduled this October, after learning that a large number of barangay officials are implicated in illegal drugs.
