San Miguel Beer giant June Mar Fajardo imposed his will inside the paint to lead the Beermen to a decisive100-89 victory over the Star Hotshots Sunday, May 24 in the PBA Governors’ Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Fajardo completed his dominant performance by scoring 21 points, grabbing 20 boards and tallying two blocks. SMB import AZ Reid was a solid contributor with 29 points, 11 boards, and four assists.
Farado’s rebounds led the Beermen’s 57 boards, much more than the 39 of the Hotshots.
The Beermen led from start to finish and protected a huge advantage as they mauled a dispirited Hotshots squad in a battle between sister teams.
“From the start, we knew it was going to be a tough game because both teams needed to win,” said SMB coach Leo Austria. “I give credit to my players because they’re focused.”
SMB thus stretched its winning streak to three games to move above the .500 mark with a 3-2 card. The Hotshots reeled to a third straight defeat after the defending champions started the conference win a win over NLEX.
Hotshots import Marqus Blakely was one of few bright spots for his team. The do-everything import had 29 points, 15 boards, four assists, two steals and two blocks in a virtually non-stop 45 minute performance.
SMB veteran forward Arwind Santos was ejected after swinging his elbow at Blakely in an apparent taunting attempt. Santos was assessed a second technical foul and ejected early in the fourth quarter.
James Yap, benched in their match against Meralco last week, was on the floor late in the game against SMB. He drilled a three-pointer from the left wing that cut the SMB lead to just five points, 92-87, with a little over two minutes left. It wasn’t enough to push the Hotshots to victory.
