The Philippine National Boy’s Basketball team, also known as Batang Gilas, defeated Bahrain, 67-52, to gain a slot in the semifinals of the 2018 FIBA Under-18 Asian Championships in Thailand.
Batang Gilas relied on their twin tower Kai Sotto, who finished with 21 points along with 10 rebounds, and AJ Edu, who finished with 16 points along with 17 rebounds, to remain undefeated in the tournament.
The Philippine team was seemingly en route to another lop-sided win after leading by nine points in the end of the first quarter, 20-11, however a 21-point run allowed Brunei to remain in the game and to gain an eight-point advantage, 26-34, in the end of the second period.
However, Gilas prevented an upset and led by 15 points at most in the final quarter.
Meanwhile, the undefeated Philippine team will now face a similarly undefeated Australian team in the semifinals after the latter defeated Japan with a score of 88-52.
Due to their entry to the semifinals, Gilas has also qualified in the 2019 FIBA Under-19 World Cup in China, their first since the start of the aforementioned international basketball tournament in 1979.
