Back to back win fails to bring Team PHL to semifinals of FIBA U-23 3×3 World Cup

After a back-to-back defeat during the first day, Team Philippines went into a winning streak on the third day of the FIBA Under-23 3-on-3 World Cup in Xi’an, China.

The Philippine team secured their first win after beating Turkmenistan, 21-8.

RJ Abarrientos scored eight points while Ricci Rivero added six points for Team Philippines.

They were even leading as much as 13 points during the game. Rhayyan Amsali also registered four points and Jeepy Faundo finished with three points for the victory of the national team.

Merdan Hojamedov gave five points for Turkmenistan that dropped to a 1-2 win-loss record after the game.

After routing Turkmenistan, Abarrientos and Rivero once again carried the Philippines to another victory by overcoming the host team China, 21-15.

Abarrientos scored 10 points, and Rivero registered seven points as Philippines handed China their first defeat in the competition. Amsali added three points and Faundo finished with one point.

Huai Jing delivered 10 points for China that secured a ticket to the quarter-finals after winning their first three games in the tournament.

However, even with their back-to-back victories, Team Philippines still fell short of gaining a slot in the play-offs as Slovenia grabbed their third win and the final quarter-finals ticket for Group B by beating Serbia, 21-12.
