The Philippine National Men’s Football team, also known as the Philippine Azkals, seized their second win in the 2018 ASEAN Football Federaton (AFF) Suzuki Cup after defeating Timor – Leste, 3-2, on Saturday, Nov. 17.
During the match at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium in Indonesia, Azkals’ Phil Younghusband scored the first goal of the game during the 27th minute.
Martin Steuble followed it with another goal during the 33rd minute to give the Philippines a two-point lead before the start of the second half.
Carlos de Murga tripled the lead of the Philipppines with a header during the 68th minute of the game.
With victory seemingly in the hands of the Azkals, a successful penalty kick by Nataniel De Jesus Reis during the 73rd minute and a goal by Joao Pedro Da Silva Freitas in the 75th minute allowed Timor – Leste to close the Philippine’s lead to a single goal.
Timor – Leste made several attempts to equalize the score but missed most of their shots that resulted to their elimination from the semi-finals run and with Philippines taking home the victory.
The Azkals will attempt to retain their winning streak when they face defending champions Thailand on Wednesday, Nov. 21, at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod. Both teams have two wins and has been undefeated in their previous games
Azkals will wrap up the group stage of the AFF Championship with a match against Indonesia at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta on Sunday, Nov. 25.
The Philippine team needs to be one of the two teams to top Group B in order to qualify to the semifinals of the tournament.
