The Philippine Azkals suffered a 5-2 loss at the hands of Syria during their first match in the second round of the qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2023 AFC Asian Cup on Thursday, September 5, at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod.
The Philippine national men’s football team seized the first goal of the match with a header from Javier Patino in the the sixth minute mark.
However, the Azkals failed to remain in the lead after Omar Al Soma and Khaled Mobayed scored goals for the visiting Syrian team in the 14th and 30th minute of the game, respectively.
Into the second half, the Azkals saw the gap widen to, 4-1, after Syria’s captain Firas Al Khatib scored a goal in the 48th minute, and Al Soma made his second goal in the 55th minute.
A goal from Mike Ott in the 83rd minute allowed the home squad to cut the point difference to two, 4-2, but the visitors still took home the victory with Al Mawas scoring their fifth goal in the 85th minute.
Philippines will attempt to secure their first victory in the qualifiers when they face Guam in the latter’s home turf on Tuesday, September 10.
