The Ateneo Lady Eagles claimed their third UAAP women’s volleyball title after beating University of Sto. Tomas Golden Tigresses in three sets, 25-17, 25-22, and 25-22 on Saturday, May 18, at the SM Mall of Asia Arena Pasay City.
Kat Tolentiono scored 15 points to lead the Lady Eagles, while Maddie Madayag, who was a rookie when the Lady Eagles won the championships in 2015, added 10 points.
Ateneo’s captain and graduating middle blocker Bea De Leon, who finished with six points, took home the Finals Most Valuable Player award
In the third set, back-to-back points from Rookie of the Year Eya Laure and the season’s Most Valuable Player Cherry ‘Sisi’ Rondina the Golden Tigresses tied the score 21-all in their attempt to remain alive in Game-3.
Tolentino brought the lead back to Ateneo before Rondina equalized the score, 22-all, with a powerful spike.
Well-placed shots from Madayag allowed her to score back-to-back point and bring the Lady Eagles to match point, 24-22. Julia Samonte then gave the final point to end the Final series.
Rondina scored 18 points and Laure, who sprained her left ankle in Game-2, had 10 points for the Tigresses who failed to bring home the title after making their first finals appearance in the last nine years.
