The Province of Maguindanao and Kidapawan City are now under the state of calamity due to severe damage in agriculture caused by the El Nino phenomenon.
Maguindanao Gov. Ismael Mangudadatu said that El Nino has been causing huge damage in the province, the reason the provincial council immediately approved the recommendation to declare the region under a state of calamity.
Maguindanao provincial agriculture department estimated around 17, 000 hectares of rice and corn plantation were damaged, 5, 000 hectares attacked by pests affecting more than 21, 000 farmers.
Maguindanao is only one of the provinces affected by the El Nino phenomenon which is expected to last until June.
In Kidapawan City, it has also damaged some crops in more than 266 hectares worth php30 million.
